Anxiety can cause feelings of fear, worry, unease or discontent which can range from mild to severe. Its very unsettling and can feel all the worse because it can feel as though it just creeps up on from nowhere making the sufferer feel even more vulnerable, out of control and on edge.

Outward signs can be pacifying actions such as scratching, nail biting, OCD, or the person might become angry very quickly, could take to avoidance behavior, have a full blown panic attack, and may experience depression as well.

 Anxiety can normally be divided into two categories, real time anxiety and anticipatory anxiety. Real time anxiety occurs when we feel genuinely threatened in some way and is understandable and obvious to us as to why we are reacting this way, anticipatory anxiety on the other hand is very different, linked to a very different set of thinking styles and beliefs which quite often include a feeling of not being in control of your life, brooding, ruminating and overly worrying about events that you have no control over or think you will not be able to cope with or events that may never happen.

Social phobia / Social Anxiety Disorder

an intense fear of being judged, criticized, embarrassed,  humiliated, making mistakes or just generally looking bad in front of others. The anxiety can lead to  stress, self doubt, panic attacks, avoidance of social situations (including close family/ friends) ) denial about why you feel the way you do, substance abuse and feelings of just not being good enough. 


When somebody has OCD they have unwanted/intrusive thoughts and fears that cause anxiety. They often attempt to relieve their anxiety by carrying out certain behaviors or rituals, so for an example a fear of germs and contamination can lead to a constant washing of the hands and clothes in an attempt to regain control.

Panic attacks

Are intense, uncontrollable and overwhelming feelings of anxiety combined with a range of physical symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath and excessive perspiration which can make the person fear they are having a heart attack.

Panic symptoms are the direct result of the hormone adrenaline which is released when you perceive that you are in danger. With the release of adrenaline, your blood pressure increases and breathing speeds up preparing you for muscular effort. Although the feelings you experience are very unpleasant, they will do you no harm. You will not die, lose control or have a heart attack.


When somebody experiences a traumatic event ( assault, accident, war, disaster )  they can develop symptoms that include flashbacks of the event, difficulty relaxing, upsetting dreams and avoidance of anything related to the event.


A person feels anxious on most days , not being able to relax and worrying about lots of different things over a long period.
